Pneumonia really kicked my butt last week, let me tell you. But by Saturday I was not ready to give up on the last challenge of Project Quilting Season 5. So….I decided to just think up something small and easy to finish in a lazy Saturday. Still totally enamored of Lisa Congdon’s Line Drawing class, I had been doing some doodling like this…. (more…)

Project Quilting 5:5 Grocery Store

Not sure how long to make this story…Our town got a new grocery store last summer, a big fancy HyVee. Its not my usual grocery store, but it does have the best produce section I’ve ever seen. Really! You can buy starfruit and dragon fruit and seven varieties of onion any day of the year! So this was my inspiration. I chose to stick with the less exotic, everyday veggies and look at the nice forms to sketch. Another part of the story is that I was watching Lisa Congdon‘s Creativebug course on Line Drawing. Fabulous, fabulous course!! I might not have needed any teaching about drawing, having a BA in art, but I still thoroughly enjoyed her first video lesson and it is a series and I can’t wait for the next installment! I learned a lot already! One thing I took away is that even when drawing from life, she just did her own thing. Looking at the thing she was drawing and then making her drawing how she wanted was her style. I love that!! I now have a stack of more than 20 doodley drawings and I just can’t stop! (more…)

Modern Quilt Guild Challenge

In addition to Project Quilting, I participated in the Modern Quilt Guild’s most recent fabric challenge. The challenge started last fall, when we were given a set of fat eighths of Riley Blake fabrics. The only requirements were that we could use any Riley Blake fabrics including any (but not all) of the ones we were given and any solids to make any kind of quilted project. I could only find a few other Riley Blake fabrics locally to fill out the palette, but here’s what I came up with.

This week’s Project Quilting Challenge: Candy!! I have a sweet tooth, yes I do, but for this challenge the first thing that came to my head wasn’t actually candy…it was the game “Candy Crush Saga!” I totally love playing that game on my ipad or iphone whenever I’m waiting in the carpool lane or otherwise away from my studio and need chill time. So I decided to make this project a bag that could carry my stuff AND my ipad when I go out. (more…)

Need a quick project to make this weekend? You might go to Pinterest and look around, perhaps search “tutorial” and hope to find some good quick instructions? I like to do that! But I hate it when the “tutorial” is just a picture…or in another language…or a bunch of ads and not what you clicked at all! Ever happened to you?

So here’s a tutorial for a pin I’ve been thinking of making for a while, but really had to figure out how to do myself. Yeah, you could probably figure it out with just the photos, but you didn’t really want that much work, did you?! Just follow me… (more…)

This week’s challenge for Project Quilting made me groan a little when I read it, but I’m glad to say that I kept thinking about it for a few days and when the inspiration finally hit, I really had a lot of fun and success with it! The theme was Upcycled and I truly raided my recycling bin for this piece. (more…)

Modern Snowflake Quilt

Here is the quilt that I made for my husband for Christmas this year. It’s the coolest simple block that combines to make a modern snowflake-like impression. It was in American Patchwork & Quilting magazine in a very stylish red, green and gray color palette, but I fell in love with this fabric collection by Connecting Threads (Jenni Calo – Shimmering Frost) and I couldn’t be happier with how it looks in this quilt! Thank goodness for Project Quilting (and Kim Lapacek), my excuse to get back to blogging! I almost skipped this challenge, because I’m knee-deep in the creative process of the Modern Quilt Guild Riley Blake Challenge, but I really wanted to get started on the first challenge of the season. Participation is such a great motivator!  So I decided to go for a quick and straightforward project yesterday. I started and finished two bed pillows to coordinate with the new quilt I made for my husband for Christmas. (more…)

Have you taken any Craftsy classes yet? I just wanted to tell you about Angela Walters’ Quilting Negative Space class, because I LOOOOOVE it! She has great advice about sketching and practicing AND she is mezmerizing to watch quilting AND her designs are so fun and simple to do, but look stunning on a quilt! I know you’ve seen these designs before… they are not all new and only her designs, but the way she puts them all together and fits them into spaces is just amazing! (more…)
